Friday, September 26

8th grade U.S. history:

Standard of the day - 8.2.3. Evaluate the major debates that occurred during the development of the Constitution and their ultimate resolutions in such areas as shared power among institutions, divided state-federal power, slavery, the rights of individuals and states, and the status of American Indian nations under the commerce clause.

9/26 Our learning goal today is to know: The Framers were influenced by: Locke's idea of natural rights, the Magna Carta, the English Bill of Rights and Montesquieu's idea of dividing & balancing the powers of govt.

 

We will begin class today by taking a quiz on our current learning log entries.

 

After the quiz you will write today's learning goal in your learning log.

 

Then we will read about approving the Constitution and the ideas which influenced the Framers of the Constitution on pgs.200 - 203 of our textbook.

 

Next you will then work in your Active Reading Workbook pgs. 44 - 56.

 

7th grade social studies:

7.2.4 Discuss the expansion of Muslim rule through military conquests and treaties, emphasizing the cultural blending within Muslim civilization and the spread and acceptance of Islam and the Arabic language.

9/26 Our learning goal today is to know: Women in the Islamic Empire were wives and mothers but could also inherit wealth and own property.

 

Today we will finish the topic trade in the Islamic Empire by reading the article on pg. 192 about Muslim carpets and watching this short video clip on carpet weaving.

 

Then we will read about Muslim society on pgs. 192 – 193 and talk about the role of women.

 

Afterwards you will work in your Active Reading Workbook on the pages for chapter 2 and also on your Speaking Tonight project which is due on Monday.

Our learning goals today are to be able to chart a debate using a flowchart.

 

Today we will watch a debate and take notes on it using a debate flow chart.

 

Then we will discuss the topics you found for us to debate.

  

Thursday, September 25

8th grade U.S. history:

Standard of the day - 8.2.3. Evaluate the major debates that occurred during the development of the Constitution and their ultimate resolutions in such areas as shared power among institutions, divided state-federal power, slavery, the rights of individuals and states, and the status of American Indian nations under the commerce clause.

9/25 Our learning goal today is to know: The Great Compromise was an agreement that the seats in the House of Representatives would vary with a state's population but in the Senate every state would have 2 representatives.

We will start today by watching part of this video: America gets a Constitution 4 mins.

 

Then we will read about the Great Compromise at the Constitutional Convention on pgs. 199 - 201 of our textbook.

 

Next you will work in your Active Reading Workbook pgs. 44 - 54.

 

Tomorrow you will take a quiz on all of your current learning log entries.

7.2.4 Discuss the expansion of Muslim rule through military conquests and treaties, emphasizing the cultural blending within Muslim civilization and the spread and acceptance of Islam and the Arabic language. 7.2.5 Describe the growth of cities and the establishment of trade routes among Asia, Africa, and Europe, the products and inventions that traveled along these routes (e.g., spices, textiles, paper, steel, new crops), and the role of merchants in Arab society.

9/25 Our learning goal today is to know: Muslims were the leading merchants in the Middle East & North Africa due to: a common language, common coins, and letters of credit.

We will begin class today by reading about trade and cities in the Islamic Empire on pages 191 - 192 of our textbook.

Next you will work up to page 29 of your Active Reading Workbook.

Our learning goals today are to learn techniques for making and answering arguments using sound reason and good evidence.

 

Today we will learn how to take notes on the opposing sides arguments.

 

Then you will use the computer with a partner to find possible debate topics that would be good for our class.


Wednesday, September 24

8th grade U.S. history:

Standard of the day - 8.2.3. Evaluate the major debates that occurred during the development of the Constitution and their ultimate resolutions in such areas as shared power among institutions, divided state-federal power, slavery, the rights of individuals and states, and the status of American Indian nations under the commerce clause.

9/24 Our learning goal today is to know: James Madison's Virginia Plan proposed a 2 house legislature with proportional representation, a chief executive, & a court system. This became the basis of the Constitution.

 

The Chapter 2 binder papers and Active Reading Workbook pgs. are now worth 60% credit for the rest of the quarter.

Today we will learn about the issue of revising the Articles of Confederation and the Constitutional Convention.

 

We will read and discuss pages 195 - 199 in our textbook.

 

Next you will work in your Active Reading Workbook pgs. 44 – 52 and finishing your Articles of Confederation plus and minus paper.

Tuesday, September 23 Minimum Day Schedule

8th grade U.S. history:

Standard of the day - 8.3.5 Know the significance of domestic resistance movements and ways in which the central government responded to such movements (e.g., Shays' Rebellion, the Whiskey Rebellion).

9/23 Our learning goal today is to know: 1787 Shay's Rebellion was an armed uprising of farmers crushed by debt & taxes trying to close the courts. It prompted concern that the govt. couldn't control unrest.

 

The Chapter 2 binder papers and Active Reading Workbook pgs. are 3 days late.

Today we will learn about the difficulties that arose under the Articles of Confederation especially Shay's Rebellion. We will read and discuss pages 194 -195 in our textbook.

 

T. Jefferson quote: "The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants. It is its natural manure."

Then you will work in your Active Reading Workbook pgs. 44 - 50.

 

You will also finish yesterday's binder paper on the pluses and minuses of the Articles of Confederation.

9/23 Our learning goal today is to know: The Islamic Empire was ruled by the: Rightly Guided Caliphs, Umayyad dynasty, Abbasid dynasty, Seljuk Turks, & Ottoman Turks.

We will begin class today by reviewing the split in Islam by looking at this Islam Splits PowerPoint. We will also discuss how the Abbasids came to power.

 

Then we will learn more about the rulers of the Islamic Empire. We will read pages 186- 187 in our textbook.

 

Next you will work on pgs. 18 - 27 of your Active Reading Workbook or on the Speaking Tonight project. It is due on Monday.

 

We will finish the period by taking a quiz on the our first 8 learning log entries.

Monday, September 22

8th grade U.S. history:

Standard of the day - 8.2.2 Analyze the Articles of Confederation and the Constitution, and the success of each in implementing the ideals of the Declaration of Independence.

9/22 Our learning goal today is to know: The Articles of Confederation were so weak that money became worthless, Britain did not withdraw all its troops, & Spain closed off the Mississippi River to us.

The Chapter 2 binder papers and Active Reading Workbook pgs. are 2 days late.

 

While I take roll, you will write today's learning goal in your learning log.

 

Today we will learn more about the problems with the Articles of Confederation. We will read and discuss pages 182 - 184 in our textbook

 

Then you will create a binder paper listing the good things and the bad things about the Articles of Confederation.

 

Next you will work on pgs. 44 - 47 in your Active Reading Workbook.

 

7th grade social studies:

9/22 Our learning goal today is to know: Muslims split into 2 groups: Shiites who believe only relatives of Caliph Ali should rule and Sunnis who believe any good Muslim can rule.

Today we will learn about the struggles within the Islamic community and the split over leadership.

 
We will use pages 183 (bottom) - 185 in our textbook to help us.
