Friday, May 8

8th grade U.S. history:

Standards of the day 8.11.1 List the original aims of Reconstruction and describe its effects on the political and social structures of different regions.

5/8 Our learning goal today is to know: "Redeemer" Democrats wanted to build a "New South." They increased industry (textile, tobacco, steel) paying workers little; farming also paid poorly. Workers became poor.

While I take roll, write today's learning goal in your learning log.

 

Today we will learn about the rise of the new South. We will read pgs. 645 - 646.

 

Then you will answer pgs. 272 - 274 in the Active Reading Workbook.

 

Next you and your partner will work on the Reconstruction Museum Exhibit project.  It is due next Thursday.

 

The chapter 14 mini-test is early next week. The Active Reading Workbook and Binder papers will be due at then as well. Review your learning log entries. You can also use: Reconstruction Rags to Riches

7th grade social studies

Today we are assessing standards 7.7, 7.7.1, 7.7.2, 7.7.3, 7.7.4, 7.7.5 Students compare and contrast the geographic, political, economic, religious, and social structures of the Meso-American and Andean civilizations.

Our learning goal today is to assess the standards under 7.7

The Aztec Warrior Poem assignment is 3 days late. 

We will begin class today with 15 minutes of review time.  You can:

play the The Americas game- Columns

play the Spanish Conquest of the Aztecs and Incas game-

Then we will take the test.

Next you will turn in your Ch. 9 binder papers and Active Reading Workbook pages.  They are due today.

If time allows, we will begin our new chapter on the Age of Exploration.  If not, you can do a "just for fun" Aztec word search and maze.  You can also play the ball court game.

Thursday, May 7

8th grade U.S. history:

Standards of the day 8.11.2 Identify the push-pull factors in the movement of former slaves to the cities in the North and to the West and their differing experiences in those regions (e.g., the experiences of Buffalo Soldiers). 8.11.1 Know the original aims of Reconstruction & describe its effects on the political and social structures of various regions.

5/7 Our learning goal today is to know: In the Compromise of 1877 Congress declared Hayes the winner of the election dispute, voted to give the South more aid, and withdraw all remaining troops from the South.  Reconstruction is officially over.

While I take roll, write today's learning goal in your new learning log.

Today we will learn about the rise of the Democrats and the Compromise of 1877. We will read pgs. 642 - 644.

Then you and your partner will begin work on Reconstruction Museum Exhibit project.  It will be due next Thursday. 

Next you will answer pgs. 272 - 273 in the Active Reading Workbook.

We will begin class today with a short video reviewing Pizarro and the Incas 7 mins

Next we will go over your chapter 9 map and narrow down what you need to study for tomorrow’s test.

Then we will play a whole class review game.

5/6 Our learning goal today is to know: Reconstruction improved public education in the South but did little to help with land ownership (sharecropping was common).  The Amnesty Act of 1872 allowed nearly all white Southerners to vote & hold office.

Today we will learn about more changes in the South due to Reconstruction.  We will read pgs. 639 - 642. 

We will also watch a video on Sharecropping 8 mins (or http://www.pbs.org/tpt/slavery-by-another-name/themes/sharecropping/ )

Next you will work on a new binder paper.

Then you will answer pgs. 272 - 273 in the Active Reading Workbook.  You should also make sure that you have completed your mini-poster on the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments.

Standard of the day-7.7.3 Explain how and where each empire arose and how the Aztec and Incan empires were defeated by the Spanish.

5/6 Our learning goal today is to know: In 1533 the Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro conquered Atahaulpa and the Inca Empire; this turned Spain into a global empire.

We will begin class today by watching a video clip on Cortes and the Quest for Glory 7:56

Then we will learn about the Spanish conquest of the Inca Empire. We will read pages 476 - 477 in our textbook

 

Next you will work in your Active Reading Workbook from pgs. 146 - 160.

Standards of the day 8.11.3 Understand the effects of the Freedmen's Bureau and the restrictions placed on the rights and opportunities of freedmen…, 8.11.4 Trace the rise of the KKK and describe the Klan’s effects, 8.11.1 Know the original aims of Reconstruction & describe its effects on the political and social structures of various regions.

5/5 Our learning goal today is to know: The 15th Amendment gave all African American men the right to vote; a few were even elected to Congress.  Former Confederates resisted the work of “scalawags” & “carpetbaggers” to expand the rights of African Americans. The KKK began.

The chapter 13 binder papers and Active Reading Workbook are now worth 60% credit.

We will begin today by watching a video clip on the Impeachment of Pres. Johnson (start at 2 mins., stop at 11 mins.)

Then we will learn about life under the Reconstruction Act and the positive and negative outcomes.  We will read pgs. 634 - 638.

Next you will work on your Active Reading Workbook pages and also on making sure you have your 4-square notes about the 4 Reconstruction plans and the mini-poster about the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments

 

7th grade social studies:

5/5 Our learning goal today is to know: In 1521, Spanish conquistador (soldier-explorer) Hernan Cortes conquered Montezuma & the Aztec Empire; destroying Tenochtitlan and building Mexico City on top of it.

Today we will learn about the arrival of the Spanish in the Americas. We will begin by discussing a PowerPoint on Spanish Advantages.  Then we will read pages 472 - 474 in our textbook.

 

Next you will work in your Active Reading Workbook from pgs. 146 - 159 and make sure your Inca 4-square notes are complete.

 

The Aztec Warrior Poem assignment is due today.

Monday, May 4

8th grade U.S. history:

Standards of the day 8.11.3 Understand the effects of the Freedmen's Bureau and the restrictions placed on the rights and opportunities of freedmen, including racial segregation and "Jim Crow" laws. 8.11.5 Understand the Thirteenth, Fourteenth, and Fifteenth Amendments to the Constitution and analyze their connection to Reconstruction.

5/4 Our learning goal today is to know: Pres. Johnson was impeached by the House but found not guilty by 1 vote short of the needed 2/3rds in the Senate.

The chapter 13 binder papers and Active Reading Workbook are 3 days late.

Today we will learn about the Reconstruction Act and the impeachment of Pres. Johnson.  We will read pgs. 632 - 634.

Next you will begin to create a mini-poster about the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments to the Constitution.

 
You will use words and images to get across meanings of each amendment.  This will be a binder paper for this chapter.
 

You will also work on your Active Reading Workbook to page 261.

We will end the class with Gettysburg re-recites.

 

 7th grade social studies

Standard of the day-7.7.1 Study the locations, landforms, and climates of Mexico, Central America, and South America and their effects on Mayan, Aztec, and Inca economies, trade, and development of urban societies. 7.7.2 Study the roles of people in each society, including class structures, family life, warfare, religious beliefs and practices, and slavery.

5/4 Our learning goal today is to know: The Inca worshipped many gods and goddesses. Inti the sun god was the most important. Incas did human sacrifice only in extreme situations.

Today we will continue to learn more about the Incas. We will begin by discussing this PowerPoint: Inca religion and sacrifice

Then we will read page 464 in our textbook and watch this video clip: The Explorers: the Incas

Afterwards you will finish up your Aztec Warrior Poem.  It is due tomorrow.

You can also work on your Active Reading Workbook pgs. 146 – 156 and finish the four-square notes from Inca RoadsInca Bridges and these two websites: Inca Mailmen and Terrace Farming..
