Friday, March 6

8th grade U.S. history:

Standard of the day 8.9 Students analyze the early and steady attempts to abolish slavery and to realize the ideals of the Declaration of Independence. 

3/6 Our learning goal today is to know: The American Colonization Society (1st big anti-slavery effort) aimed to resettle African Americans in Africa or the Caribbean. They created the African country of Liberia.

We will start today by reviewing the answers to yesterday's chapter 11 test.

Then we will begin chapter 12 by previewing pg. 525 and then by reading pg. 529.

Next we will watch part of a video clip on Liberia.

Then you will work on pg. 203 - 204 of the Active Reading Workbook.

You will also turn the Ch. 11 Binder Papers & the Active Reading Workbook pages.  Both are due today.

Standard of the day:7.8.5 Detail advances made in literature, the arts, science, mathematics, cartography, engineering, and the understanding of human anatomy and astronomy 

3/6 Our learning goal today is to know: Among the great artists of the Renaissance are: Botticelli, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, & Raphael. Even the Pope hired them.

Today we will learn more about the artists of the Renaissance. We will begin by reading pages 410 and 411.

Standard of the day 8.8.Students analyze the divergent paths of the American people in the West from 1800 to the mid-1800s and the challenges they faced.

3/5 Today we are assessing all of the standards under 8.8

Today we will begin with time to review for today’s Chapter 11 test.  You can:

We will begin class today with a short video clip to follow up on yesterday's discussion of Niccolo Machiavelli: Machiavelli and The Prince 5:10

Next we will learn about the art and artists of the Renaissance. We will start by reading pages 409 - 410 in our textbook. We will also use this PowerPoint to help us: Comparing Classical, Medieval, & Renaissance Art

Then you will work on A Letter from Florence. It is due on Wednesday.

Wednesday, March 4

8th grade U.S. history:

Standard of the day 8.8.2 Describe the purpose, challenges, and economic incentives associated with westward expansion, including the concept of Manifest Destiny and the territorial acquisitions that spanned numerous decades.

3/4 Our learning goal today is to know: Utah was settled by members of the Mormon religion. The issue of polygamy stalled its bid for statehood.

Then we will learn about U.S. settlers in Utah and the impact of the Mormon faith

7th grade social studies

Standards of the day: 7.8.2 Explain the importance of Florence in the early stages of the Renaissance and the growth of independent trading cities (e.g., Venice), with emphasis on the cities' importance in the spread of Renaissance ideas.

3/4 Our learning goal today is to know: Italian Renaissance nobles lived in cities, were active in trade, banking, and in public life - often helping to run the government.

The Ch. 6, part 2 binder papers and Active Reading Workbook pgs. are 3 days late.

We will begin today by watching a part of a video clip on Venice so you can see it in comparison to Florence.

Then we will learn about how the "urban noble" and how city-states were ruled. We will read pages 390 - 391 to help us with this.

Next you will answer pgs. 114 - 117 in your Active Reading Workbook and also finish either of the binder papers you are not yet done with.

Then we will begin a new project: A Letter from Florence. It will be due next Wednesday.

Tuesday, March 3

8th grade U.S. history:

Standards of the day 8.8.6 Describe the Texas War for Independence and the Mexican-American War, including territorial settlements, the aftermath of the wars, and the effects the wars had on the lives of Americans, including Mexican Americans today. 8.8.2 Describe the purpose, challenges, and economic incentives associated with westward expansion, including the concept of Manifest Destiny and the territorial acquisitions that spanned numerous decades.

3/3 Our learning goal today is to know: Most 49ers did not strike it rich. They lost their money in the boomtowns buying supplies & gambling. CA population rocketed to 1/4 mil. in 4 years so they applied for statehood.

For U.S. history today we will start by watching this short video clip on CA boomtowns.

Then we will learn about California during the Gold Rush on pgs. 504 - 505 of our textbook.

Afterwards we will listen to a song about the gold rush and you will answer a few questions about it. You will also analyze a related picture. This will be a binder paper.

Then you will answer pgs. 181 -201 in the Active Reading Workbook.

We will take the chapter test on Friday. You should review your learning log entries each night to be well prepared.  You can also play Rags to Riches chapter 11 review

3/3 Our learning goal today is to know: Florence was the first wealthy city-state of the Renaissance due to its trade in cloth and banking. Venice became even wealthier.

Today we will learn about the wealthy city-states of the Renaissance. We will begin by reading pages 387 - 389 in our textbook.

We will also watch a short video clip on Florence (and perhaps Venice).

Next you will answer a worksheet on the Renaissance and trade. This will be a binder paper.

Monday, March 2

8th grade U.S. history:

3/2 Our learning goal today is to know: Gold was discovered in CA in 1848 right after CA was officially the Bear Flag Republic, free from Mexico's rule. Thousands of Forty-Niners flocked to the American River region.

Today we will learn about the California Gold Rush on pgs. 501 - 503.

Next you and a partner will go to: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/amex/goldrush/sfeature/game.html and work through the Strike it Rich simulation.  You will do this twice, first as one character, then as another.  You will write a summary of your experiences as one of these characters.  This will be a binder paper.

Afterwards you will answer pgs. 181 -201 in the Active Reading Workbook.

3/2 Our learning goal today is to know: The Renaissance began in Italy because it: had been the center of the Roman Empire, was wealthy from trade, & had many competitive city-states.

We will start class today by going over Friday's test.

Then we will begin our new unit on the Renaissance. We will start by reading pages 385 - 387 in our textbook.
