Friday, Feb. 27

8th grade U.S. history:

Standard of the day 8.8.6 Describe the Texas War for Independence and the Mexican-American War, including territorial settlements, the aftermath of the wars, and the effects the wars had on the lives of Americans, including Mexican Americans today.

2/27 Our learning goal today is to know:  Pres. Polk ordered troops to take over New Mexico, Calif., & Mexico City. The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo & the Mexican Cession gave U.S. everything for $15 mil.

Today we will learn about the Mexican American War. We will read pgs. 496 - 497.

Then we will watch this news video on the war: http://www.cbsnews.com/news/americas-forgotten-war-south-of-the-border/ (7:31 minutes)

Next you will create a two perspective picture about this war showing the U.S. perspective and the Mexico perspective. This will be a binder paper.

Then you will answer pgs. 181 - 202 in the Active Reading Workbook.

 

7th grade social studies:

Standards of theday:7.6,7.6.6, 7.6.7, 7.6.8,7.6.9, 7.8.Students analyze the geographic ,political, economic, religious, and social structures of the civilizations of Medieval Europe. Students analyze the origins, accomplishments, and geographic diffusion of the Renaissance.

2/27 Our learning goal today is to know: From about 1350 to 1550 Europe experienced a "rebirth" of interest in art and learning. This is known as the Renaissance.

Today we will take the test on the second half of chapter 6 medieval Europe. You will have the first ten minutes to review. You can review by:

Then you will take the test.

After you are done, you will turn in your Ch. 6 binder papers and pgs. 98 - 112 in the Active Reading Workbook. They are due today.

Next you will start labeling our new Renaissance Map.

8th grade U.S. history:

Standard of the day 8.8.6 Describe the Texas War for Independence and the Mexican-American War, including territorial settlements, the aftermath of the wars, and the effects the wars had on the lives of Americans, including Mexican Americans today.

2/26 Our learning goal today is to know: U.S. travelers saw good land when trading on the Santa Fe Trail. Mexico declined the U.S. offer to buy the land. The Mexican American war was sparked by a dispute over the Texas border.

Today we will read pgs. 492 - 495 about land owned by Mexico that the U.S. wanted to acquire.

Next you will read page 514 and the top of 515 and answer questions 1 – 4 on lined paper. This is a binder paper.

2/26 Our learning goal today is to know: In 1492 King Ferdinand & Queen Isabella of Spain successfully fought to expel all non-Christians from Spain.

Before we start today's new lesson, we will wrap up yesterday's by looking at a PowerPoint about Joan of Arc.

Then we will learn about the Spanish and Portuguese Reconquista by reading page 369 in our textbook.

Next you will work on pgs. 98 - 112 in the Active Reading Workbook.

8th grade U.S. history:

Standard of the day 8.8.6 Describe the Texas War for Independence and the Mexican-American War, including territorial settlements, the aftermath of the wars, and the effects the wars had on the lives of Americans, including Mexican Americans today.

2/25 Our learning goal today is to know:  At first rejected because of Mexico & the slavery issue, Texas finally became a state in 1845. The province of New Mexico consisted of all the land between Texas & Calif.

The Slogans & Buttons project is 3 days late. 

For U.S. history today we will finish learning how Texas became independent. We will read pgs. 486 – 487 and 491.

Next you will work on an article entitled "A Spanish Legacy". This will become a binder paper for Ch. 11.

Then you will work on the chapter 11 pgs. of your Active Reading Workbook.

2/25 Our learning goal today is to know: Joan of Arc, a French peasant girl, helped motivate the French to finally win the Hundred Years' War against the English.

Today we will learn about the Hundred Years' War between France and England and the role that Joan of Arc played in saving France. We will begin by reading page 367.

Then you will work on pgs. 98 - 112 in the Active Reading Workbook.

The chapter 6, part 2 test is this Friday. Study your binder papers a little each night so you will be prepared. You can start reviewing with this game: Rags to Riches

8th grade U.S. history:

Standard of the day 8.8.6 Describe the Texas War for Independence and the Mexican-American War, including territorial settlements, the aftermath of the wars, and the effects the wars had on the lives of Americans, including Mexican Americans today.

2/24 Our learning goal today is to know: Texans wanted independence from Mexico. A major defeat at the Alamo inspired Texans to fight harder. A major victory at San Jacinto in 1836 led to Texas as an independent republic.

For U.S. history today we will be learning about the struggle for independence in Texas. We will read pgs. 483 - 486.

Next we will watch a video clip on the Alamo (8:08).

Then you will work on a binder paper about today’s topic.

Afterwards you will answer pgs. 181 -189 in the Active Reading Workbook.

Standard of the day- 7.6.7 Map the spread of the bubonic plague from Central Asia to China, the Middle East, and Europe and describe its impact on global population.

2/24 Our learning goal today is to know: The plague killed 1 of every 2 to 3 Europeans, caused a drop in trade & food prices, an increase in wages & Anti-Semitism, and the end of feudalism.

The Comic Strip project is 2 days late 

Today we will continue to learn about the plague known as the Black Death and its impact on Europe. We will begin by reading pages 365 - 366 in our textbook and discussing a PowerPoint.

Next we will watch this video: The Black Death 14 mins.

Then you will work on pgs. 98 - 110 in the Active Reading Workbook and a binder paper about the plague.

Standard of the day 8.8.2 Describe the purpose, challenges, and economic incentives associated with westward expansion, including the concept of Manifest Destiny and the territorial acquisitions that spanned numerous decades.

2/23 Our learning goal today is to know: Britain & the U.S. compromised on the Oregon border. In Texas, U.S. settlers & Tejanos shared the land & tension until Gen. Santa Anna made himself sole dictator.

The Slogans & Buttons project is 1 day late. The Ch. 10 binder paper and Active Reading workbook pgs. are 3 days late.

Today we will begin by watching a video on the Oregon Trail.  You will take notes on the challenges encountered during the trip.

Then we will learn about the call for "fifty-four forty of fight" on pg. 475 and about Texas gaining independence on pgs. 481 - 482.

Next you will work on a binder paper about the Oregon Trail.

Then you will work on pgs. 181-189 in the Active Reading Workbook.

2/23 Our learning goal today is to know: In 1346 a terrible plague known as the Black Death arrived in Europe on fleas and rats that came with trade from the Middle East & Asia.

The Comic Strip History of the Crusades is 1 day late.

Today we will learn about one of the worst epidemics to strike the middle ages, the plague. We will begin by taking notes on this deadly disease.  These notes will become a binder paper.

Next you will read an eye witness account of what life was like in medieval Europe during the plague epidemic.

Then you will work on pgs. 98 - 110 in the Active Reading Workbook.
