Friday, February 20

8th grade U.S. history:

Standard of the day 8.8.2 Describe the purpose, challenges, and economic incentives associated with westward expansion, including the concept of Manifest Destiny and the territorial acquisitions that spanned numerous decades.

2/20 Our learning goal today is to know: The Oregon Trail, the most practical route to the western U.S., was a difficult 2000 mile journey especially in prairie schooners. Manifest Destiny = U.S. to own whole continent east to west.

The Ch. 10 binder papers and Active Reading Workbook pages are 2 days late.

Today we will by watching short video clip on Friday’s topic: Fur Trade & Mountain Men(6:15)

Then we will read about the settling of Oregon on pgs. 473 - 474.

Afterwards you will answer pgs.181 -182 in the Active Reading Workbook.

Next you will finish and turn in the Slogans & Buttons project. It is due today.

Standard of the day- 7.6.8 Understand the importance of the Catholic church as a political, intellectual, and aesthetic institution

2/20 Our learning goal today is to know: Thomas Aquinas made popular the idea that people have natural rights that government cannot take away including: the right to live, to learn, to worship, & to reproduce.

While I take roll, write today's learning goal in your learning log.

Today we will learn about one of the great intellects of the medieval church, Thomas Aquinas. We will start by reading pages 361 - 363 in our textbook.

Next you will work on a binder paper about Thomas Aquinas and also on pgs. 98 - 108 in the Active Reading Workbook.

Then you will finish and turn in the Comic Strip History of the Crusades project. It is due today.

Our learning goal today is to begin to gain a basic understanding of how to attach different meanings to words.

 

Today we will continue to work on writing a scene. If ready, we will see some scenes performed today.


Thursday, February 19

8th grade U.S. history:

Standard of the day 8.8.2 Describe the purpose, challenges, and economic incentives associated with westward expansion, including the concept of Manifest Destiny and the territorial acquisitions that spanned numerous decades.

2/19 Our learning goal today is to know: Oregon Country was Oregon, Washington, Idaho, & parts of Montana, Wyoming, and Canada. American fur traders (Mt. Men) hunted for beaver skin there.

The Ch. 10 binder papers and Active Reading Workbook pages are 1 day late.

We will begin today by briefly discussing the results of the Chapter 10 mini-test.

Next we will begin chapter 11 on Manifest Destiny. We will read pg. 471 - 472.

Then we will do all of our “cross outs” in the Active Reading Workbook.

Next you will work on the Slogans & Buttons project. It is due tomorrow.

Standard of the day- 7.6.8 Understand the importance of the Catholic Church as a political, intellectual, and aesthetic institution

2/19 Our learning goal today is to know: Church leaders wanted everyone to follow their teachings. The Inquisition was created to try people who were suspected of heresy.

While I take roll, write today's learning goal in your learning log.

We will learn about the Inquisition and how non-Christians in Europe were treated. We will read pages 358 - 359 in our textbook to help us with this.

Then you will work on pgs. 98 - 105 in the Active Reading Workbook.

Then you will finish work on your Comic Strip Crusades project.  It is due tomorrow.

 8th grade U.S. history:

Standard of the day 8.8.1 Discuss the election of Andrew Jackson as president in 1828, the importance of Jacksonian democracy, and his actions as president

2/18 Our learning goal today is to know: The Whig Party collapsed by 1856 and was eventually replaced by the Republican Party.

While I take roll, write today’s learning goal into your learning log.

Today we will learn a little more about the Whig Party (which replaced the old National Republican Party, which replaced the old Federalist Party.) Next we will take the Ch. 10 Mini-test.

2/18 Our learning goal today is to know: Cathedrals were the largest structures built in medieval Europe and required many skilled workers to construct.

While I take roll, write today's learning goal in your learning log.

Today we will finish watching yesterday's video on cathedrals.

Next you will work on a new binder paper about cathedrals.
 

Then you will work on your Comic Strip Crusades project.  It is due on Friday.

2/17 Our learning goal today is to know: Pres. Van Buren got Congress to establish an independent federal treasury. William H. Harrison, a Whig, won the next election but died & V.P. John Tyler took over.

While I take roll, write today’s learning goal into your learning log.

Today we will learn about the formation of the Whig party. We will start first with a video clip on The Panic of 1837 (3:12) and then we will read pgs. 460 - 461.

Then you will finish the Ch. 10 pages of the Active Reading Workbook.  They are due tomorrow.

Next you will work on the Slogans & Buttons project. It is due this Friday.

We will take a chapter 10 mini-test tomorrow.  Study your learning log entries tonight.
