8th grade U.S. history:

Standard of the day -Today we are assessing all aspects of the standards under 8.5

12/19 Our learning goal today is to show mastery of the standards under 8.5 U.S. foreign policy in the early republic.

There is no learning log entry today.

The Found Poem assignment is 1 day late. Turn it into Mr. Craven if you have it.

Today we will take the Chapter 7 Test. You will have the first ten minutes to review. You can review by:

Taking one last look at your binder papers.

By using Study Central

By playing the Rags to Riches Ch.7 Review Game

By having someone at your table quiz you

Then we will take the test.

When you are done you will make sure you are done with both your Active Reading Workbook pgs. 110 – 124 and your Ch. 7 binder papers. Both are when we return from break.

Then you will begin work on mapping the changes in our nation by using the maps on pgs. 341, 34, and 35.

 

7th grade social studies:

Standards of the day - 7.5.5 Study the ninth and tenth centuries' golden age of literature, art, and drama and its lasting effects on culture today, including Murasaki Shikibu's Tale of Genji.

12/19Our learning goal today is to know:  Much of Japan's wealth came from the hard work of the farmers, artisans, and fishermen; also from trade with other Asian countries.

While I take roll, you need to write today's learning goal in your learning log.

The Samurai Tanka assignment 1 day late. Turn it into Mr. Craven if you have it.

Today we will learn about the economy of Japan and how it was built on the labor of Japanese peasants. We will read pages 314 - 315 in our textbook.

Then you will finish work on pgs. 70 - 86 in your Active Reading Workbook.

Next you will finish writing “test style questions” for each of the Ch. 5 learning log entries. This is one of your binder papers.

Then you will work with your partner on our new project, the kid’s guide to the arts of medieval Japan.  It is due the Friday after Winter Break.

The Chapter 5 Japan test is on the Wednesday after Winter Break.  Study your learning log entries a little each day to be well prepared.

Thursday, December 18

8th grade U.S. history:

Standard of the day -8.5.2 Know the changing boundaries of the United States and describe the relationships the country had with its neighbors (current Mexico and Canada) and Europe, including the influence of the Monroe Doctrine, and how those relationships influenced westward expansion and the Mexican-American War.

12/18 Our learning goal today is to know: The U.S. recognized new Latin American. The Monroe Doctrine declared that there was to be no future European colonization in the American continents.

While I take roll, you will write today's learning goal in your learning log.

The Found Poem assignment is due today.

We will begin today by reviewing Chapter 7 as a large group.

Then you will review for tomorrow's test on your own.  To help you study you can:

12/18 Our learning goal today is to know: Sumo wrestling, another cultural art of Japan, copied some samurai behaviors.

Today will begin by reading an article about Japanese sumo.

Then we will watch part of a video on the topic.

Next you and your partner will work on the project.  It is due the Wednesday when we return from Winter Break.

Wednesday, December 17

 

8th grade U.S. history:

Standard of the day -8.5.2 Know the changing boundaries of the United States and describe the relationships the country had with its neighbors (current Mexico and Canada) and Europe, including the influence of the Monroe Doctrine, and how those relationships influenced westward expansion and the Mexican-American War.   

12/17 Our learning goal today is to know:  U.S. tried to buy land from the new country of Mexico, then went to war & won gaining the entire southwest including breakaway Texas.

While I take roll, you will write today's learning goal in your learning log.

We will begin today by going over a PowerPoint of what you learned while I was absent.

Then we will watch this short video clip: United States Expansionism (4:30 minutes)

Next we will learn about the United States gaining land from the new country of Mexico and our relationships with new Latin America nations. We will read pgs. 366 - 367 in our textbook.

Then you will answer the Section Review questions on pg. 367.

Next you will answer pages 110- 124 in your Active Reading Workbook.

12/17 Our learning goal today is to know:  Writing was popular including: calligraphy, tanka & haiku poems, novels like Murasaki Shikibu's The Tale of Genji, and Noh plays.

The Final copy Samurai Tanka poem is due tomorrow when I return.

Today we will learn about writing in medieval Japan. We will begin by reading page 312 in our textbook.

Then you and a partner will begin work on a new project about some of the cultural arts in Japan.  It will be due the Wednesday after Winter Break.

Tuesday, December 16   Helix Meet and Greet this morning ½ hr.

8th U.S. History:

Standard of the day - 8.5.2 Know the changing boundaries of the United States and describe the relationships the country had with its neighbors (current Mexico and Canada) and Europe, including the influence of the Monroe Doctrine, and how those relationships influenced westward expansion and the Mexican-American War.

12/16 Our learning goal today is to know:  The 49th parallel became the U.S. northern border with Canada. The 42nd parallel the southern border with Spain in the west but the U.S. gained Florida in the east.

 

While I take roll, you will write today's learning goal in your new learning log.

 

Today we will learn about the U.S. clearing up its borders with Britain and Spain.  We will read pgs. 364 – 365 in our textbook.

 

Then you will work on pgs. 110 – 122 of the Active Reading Workbook.

 

The Found Poem assignment is due tomorrow.

7th grade social studies:

Standards of the day - 7.5.4 Trace the development of distinctive forms of Japanese Buddhism.

12/16 Our learning goal today is to know: Most Japanese believed in both the religions of Shinto and Buddhism (either Pure Land Buddhism or Zen Buddhism.)

While I take roll, you need to write today's learning goal in your learning log.

Today we will learn about the impact of religion on medieval Japan. We will begin by discussing/reading pages 310 - 311 in our textbook.

Next we will watch a short video clip on Zen Buddhism 3:21 minutes

Afterwards you will finish your Samurai Tanka poems.  Turn the final copy poem in when Mrs. Christopher returns.

Then you will begin writing “test style questions” (multiple choice and/or matching only) for each of your learning log entries. You will work on this again tomorrow.

You can also work on pgs. 70- 83 in your Active Reading Workbook.

Monday, December 15

8th grade U.S. history:

Standard of the day - 8.5.1 Understand the political and economic causes and consequences of the War of 1812 and know the major battles, leaders, and events that led to a final peace. 8.5.2 Know the changing boundaries of the United States and describe the relationships the country had with its neighbors (current Mexico and Canada) and Europe, including the influence of the Monroe Doctrine, and how those relationships influenced westward expansion and the Mexican-American War.

12/15 Our learning goal today is to know: James Monroe became the 5th President to a happy & patriotic America. With no political divisions to worry about, Monroe focused on the border with Canada and the Oregon Country.

While I take roll, you will write today's learning goal in your learning log.

Today we will learn about post-War of 1812 America. We will begin by reading pages. 363 - 364.

Then we will watch this video clip: America's Era of Expansion: Monroe (3:42)

Next you will work on the Found Poem assignment for the Star Spangled Banner. It is due Wednesday at the end of the period (note due date chg.)

You can also work on your Active Reading Workbook, pages 110- 121.  

If time allow, you will also read and summarize pgs. 360 - 361 in your textbook. 
 
The chapter 7 test will be this Friday.  Study your learning log entries. 

 

7th grade social studies:

Standards of the day - 7.5.4 Trace the development of distinctive forms of Japanese Buddhism, 7.5.6 Analyze the rise of a military society in the late twelfth century and the role of the samurai in that society.

12/15 Our learning goals today are to know:  Ninjas were spies, scouts, saboteurs, and assassins in medieval Japan; doing work that samurai found too dishonorable.

While I take roll, you need to write today's learning goal in your learning log.

Today we will learn about another warrior group in Japan in the middle ages - ninjas.

We will use this PowerPoint to help us: Ninjas

Then we will watch this video clip on the last remaining modern ninja master: Modern master 1:36

Then you will work on your samurai tanka poetry assignment which is due tomorrow at the end of the period.
