Principal's Message

Bonita DeAmicis   Welcome

Hello Cheetah Students, Friends, and Families,

VLMA strives to grow every Cheetah into a confident and successful person, ready for the next step when they leave our school in 8th grade. Teachers, staff and administration works together to provide a challenging academic curriculum to prepare every student for the rigor of high school and strong emotional support to our children and families so that every cheetah receives that extra boost when needed. Our students become proficient in technology while learning math and English, and our students become versed in social skills while enjoying their time here. We boast a diverse population that mirrors a global society and prepares our Cheetahs for the future.

We are so glad you have joined us on this journey.

Dr.Bonita DeAmicis
Principal, Vista La Mesa Academy

Department of Defense Grants

The purpose of the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) program is to improve student achievement, increase educational opportunities, ensure student preparation for success in college and careers, and ease the challenges military dependent students have due to transitions and deployments.

In 2010 DoDEA awarded Vista La Mesa Academy a 3 year grant in the amount of $361,856.00 for the submitted project, “Full STEM Ahead”.   This project was focused on improving student achievement in math and science in grades 5-8. In 2014, DoDEA awarded Vista La Mesa an additional 5 year grant to bring STEM and Restorative Practices to grades TK-5.

Since the start of these awards period Vista La Mesa Academy principal, Dr. Bonita DeAmicis, has invested time, energy, and grant funds to improve classroom instruction by providing extensive professional development to staff and scheduling collaboration time for teachers.   Classrooms in grades TK-8 have been equipped with wireless Internet connectivity, 1:1 student to computer laptop ratio, ipads for elementary project-based learning, a classroom on wheels charging and storage station, and classroom management software.

By the end of the two grants, all students in grades Tk through 8 will receive four to ten weeks of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM)instruction through the Project Lead the Way (PLTW) program annually.  Project Lead The Way is the nation's leading provider of STEM programs. “Through world-class K-12 curriculum, high-quality teacher professional development, and outstanding partnerships, PLTW is helping students develop the skills needed to succeed in the global economy.”  https://www.pltw.org/

These grants provide ongoing extension activities with trips to local science-oriented venues like Fleet Center, Midway Ship, and Living Coast Discovery Center as well as classroom workshops and school assemblies like Family Fun Science Nights.

Vista La Mesa Academy is proud of the partnership with the Department of Defense and thrilled to provide these educational opportunities to our students and their families.
